The Stamford Community Health Center (formerly the SouthEnd Medical Center) traces its roots to 1985 when a group
of community leaders, staff from St. Joseph’s Medical Center,
Stamford Health Department and members of the Committee on
Training and Employment joined forces to address the need for
medical services in the community. By 1989, a primary care
center had been established and in 1994, the Stamford Community
Health Center, Inc. became an independent non-profit community
health center.
The Stamford Community Health Center provides culturally
appropriate health services to a population of patients who are
65% Latino (Central and South American and Puerto Rican), 15%
Haitian, 15% African American, 5% Caucasian/other. The staff of
physicians, nurse practitioners, and patient care assistants
provide multi-lingual care, many speaking Spanish, French and
Creole.
The Stamford Community Health Center is affiliated with the
Stamford Health System. The Center offers comprehensive
pediatric and adult medicine, gynecology, dentistry, and social
and substance abuse services. Special programs include
childbirth and child care classes, "families in training" and
health care for homeless individuals.
